The Infiniti QX70 is dead, but its successor could become a best-seller

At a time when automakers can't field new crossovers fast enough for the market's appetite, it's a little odd to see one depart. The Infiniti QX70, formerly the Infiniti FX, will not be offered in 2018 after 15 years of production spanning two generations, Automotive News has learned.

But why is the QX70 leaving the lineup at a time when luxury crossovers are printing money?

It's not the nonsensical nameplate, but rather the impending debut of a new QX50, which will offer packaging very similar to the QX70. The upcoming compact luxury crossover is expected to be the brand's best-seller, with Infiniti clearing the decks above it in anticipation.

That doesn't mean the Murano-based crossover is gone for good: A QX70 successor will arrive eventually, but not before 2021 or 2022. That's a long time in modern cars years -- a whole product cycle -- and its absence will either steer buyers higher up in the range to the larger QX60, or down to the QX50.

The QX70 pretty much invented the rakish premium crossover segment, and for two generations, it pulled it off convincingly if not always beautifully. But the current-generation QX70 debuted in 2008, and Infiniti faced the choice of completely redesigning it, giving it an exterior freshening that could make it appear new, or killing it off to focus on other crossovers and SUVs in the lineup. Since a new QX80 and QX50 are due next year, the demise of the QX70 is simply a matter of focusing resources in light of shifting consumer interest.

Don't think big, coupelike SUVs are on their way out: The BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe are busy mining this surprisingly popular segment and are due to be joined by even more competitors.
